After making Nova Scotia her new home in 2015, Kay discovered her passion at the Canadian College of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. There, she excelled at embracing the eastern approach to holism and understanding the ways it can complement the western approach of medicine. Graduating in 2019, she still carries the passion and excitement that stirred at the beginning of the journey. Kay has now started her TCM acupuncture practice on the South Shore of NS, near Lunenburg. It is her goal in the near future to create Nova Scotia's first mobile unit to bring TCM healing wherever it's needed!

Acupuncture is the insertion of very thin needles in different locations on the body, often referred to as "acupoints". These acupoints are found along several energetic channels that map the entirety of the body. According to Tradition Chinese Medicine, it is the balance and smooth flow of Qi (chee), blood, and body fluids, within and around these channels that give our bodies optimal health. When the balance or flow of Qi is deficient or obstructed it may lead to discomfort or make one susceptible to illness. Through an in-depth intake and diagnosis process, a TCM Acupuncturist chooses specific points to help bring balance back to a patients body. This approach differs from western medicine as it focuses on treating both the symptoms and the root causes of the patient’s illness. Acupuncture has had positive results with conditions such as;
BACK & NECK PAIN SCIATICA HEADACHES & MIGRAINES ARTHRITIS DIGESTIVE ISSUES ANXIETY GYNECOLOGICAL DEPRESSION PTSD HIP & KNEE PAIN COMMON COLD SYMPTOMS INSOMNIA FATIGUE

Fire cupping is the traditional version of the increasingly popular cupping appearing in pop culture lately. Generally performed by a TCM acupuncturist, it involves placing glass jars on the skin that have been devoid of air by way fire, which creates a suction effect. One way to think about cupping is as an inverse massage. Instead of applying pressure to muscles, the suction is used to pull skin, tissue and muscles upward. Depending on your comfort and the practitioner’s assessment of the problem, cups may be left stationary or slid around. Cupping causes the skin to temporarily turn red, blue or purple, especially if there is an injury or energetic blockage under the area that was cupped. The skin discoloration can last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, but is rarely painful. Once the marks have cleared, the procedure can be repeated until the condition or ailment is resolved. Most find that they feel very relaxed and a sense of relief from tension after just one treatment.

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered through either gentle or no touch and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low/imbalanced, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stressed. When the energy is high/in balance, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". (Same as Qi in Chinese Medicine) When combined, Reiki means "spiritually guided life force energy." Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include feelings of peace, security and well being.
